What Is Forex?

FOREX — the foreign exchange market or currency market or Forex is the market where one currency is traded for another. It is one of the largest markets in the world.
Some of the participants in this market are simply seeking to exchange a foreign currency for their own, like multinational corporations which must pay wages and other expenses in different nations than they sell products in. However, a large part of the market is made up of currency traders, who speculate on movements in exchange rates, much like others would speculate on movements of stock prices. Currency traders try to take advantage of even small fluctuations in exchange rates.
In the foreign exchange market there is little or no 'inside information'. Exchange rate fluctuations are usually caused by actual monetary flows as well as anticipations on global macroeconomic conditions. Significant news is released publicly so, at least in theory, everyone in the world receives the same news at the same time.
Currencies are traded against one another. Each pair of currencies thus constitutes an individual product and is traditionally noted XXX/YYY, where YYY is the ISO 4217 international three-letter code of the currency into which the price of one unit of XXX currency is expressed. For instance, EUR/USD is the price of the euro expressed in US dollars, as in 1 euro = 1.2045 dollar.
Unlike stocks and futures exchange, foreign exchange is indeed an interbank, over-the-counter (OTC) market which means there is no single universal exchange for specific currency pair. The foreign exchange market operates 24 hours per day throughout the week between individuals with Forex brokers, brokers with banks, and banks with banks. If the European session is ended the Asian session or US session will start, so all world currencies can be continually in trade. Traders can react to news when it breaks, rather than waiting for the market to open, as is the case with most other markets.
Average daily international foreign exchange trading volume was $5.1 trillion in April 2016 according to the BIS triennial report.
Like any market there is a bid/offer spread (difference between buying price and selling price). On major currency crosses, the difference between the price at which a market maker will sell ("ask", or "offer") to a wholesale customer and the price at which the same market-maker will buy ("bid") from the same wholesale customer is minimal, usually only 1 or 2 pips. In the EUR/USD price of 1.4238 a pip would be the '8' at the end. So the bid/ask quote of EUR/USD might be 1.4238/1.4239.
This, of course, does not apply to retail customers. Most individual currency speculators will trade using a broker which will typically have a spread marked up to say 3-20 pips (so in our example 1.4237/1.4239 or 1.423/1.425). The broker will give their clients often huge amounts of margin, thereby facilitating clients spending more money on the bid/ask spread. The brokers are not regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (since they do not sell securities), so they are not bound by the same margin limits as stock brokerages. They do not typically charge margin interest, however since currency trades must be settled in 2 days, they will "resettle" open positions (again collecting the bid/ask spread).
Individual currency speculators can work during the day and trade in the evenings, taking advantage of the market's 24 hours long trading session.

USD/CAD Recovers Lost Ground on Canadian Housing Price Index

The USD/CAD currency pair today recovered initially lost ground after the release of Canada’s housing price indexdata in the early American session. The pair had lost significant ground earlier in today’s session due to yield spread differentials that were much stronger than the impact of global oil prices on the loonie.
The USD/CAD currency pair recovered over 40 points from its daily lows hit earlier in today’s session after the release of the Canadian housing data.
The Canadian dollar was stronger against the US dollar during the European session boosted by higher global crude oil prices, as tracked by the West Texas Intermediate, which hit highs around $57/bbl. Other factors propping up the loonie included yesterday’s building permits data and the strong yield spread differentials experienced earlier in today’s session. However, the hawkish stance taken by Bank of Canada Governor, Stephen Poloz, in recent comments also boosted the loonie against the greenback.
The release of the Canadian new housing price index by Statistics Canada, which met expectations, was largely unnoticed as the greenback rebounded in the early American session. This was despite the higher than expected initial jobless claims data released by the Department of Labor, which came in at 239,000 versus the expected 232,000, but could not derail the greenback.
The currency pair’s short-term performance is likely to be affected by global oil prices as well as the planned unveiling of the US tax reform bill, scheduled for later today.
The USD/CAD currency pair was trading at 1.2718 as at 14:54 GMT having rallied from a daily low of 1.2685. The CAD/JPY currency pair was trading at 89.17 having dropped from a high of 89.62 earlier today.

Swiss Franc Supported by Low Unemployment

The Swiss franc was flat against some currencies and rose versus others today as a report showed that unemployment in Switzerland remained extremely low.
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs reported that the unemployment rate was at 3.0% in October (3.1% if adjusted for seasonal variations), unchanged from September and in line with market expectations. It was the lowest level since October 2014. Meanwhile, Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank was delivering a speech today, defending independence of central banks around the world even though they “have faced growing criticism” as “they resorted to unconventional monetary policy instruments and expanded their field of operations” after the financial crisis.
USD/CHF dropped from 0.9998 to 0.9933 as of 17:53 GMT today. EUR/CHF slid from 1.1591 to 1.1571, retreating from the daily high of 1.1618.

US Dollar Rallies Against Peers on Strong Services PMI Data

The US dollar today rallied against its main peers such as the euro and the British pound after the release of positive Services PMI data. The US dollar recovered from a poor showing after the release of non-farm payrolls data in the early North American session.
The US dollar’s performance against a basket of its main peers, as tracked by the US Dollar Index, improved later during the session as the DXY hit a high of 95.01.
The greenback opened the American session much weaker against its main peers as the Dollar Index hit lows below 94.50. The currency’s poor performance was largely triggered by the non-farm payrolls report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report indicated that the country added 261,000 new jobs in October as opposed to the expected 313,000 jobs, although this was a major improvement from the 18,000 jobs reported in September. Furthermore, the unemployment rate was lower than expected as it was recorded at 4.1%, versus the expected 4.2% rate, but the DXY still trended lower.
The release of the US ISM Non-manufacturing/Services Composite PMI for October a few hours later was what reversed the greenback’s fortunes. The PMI was recorded at 60.1, which was higher than the expected 58.5 and the previous 59.8. Overall, the releases from the US docket were positive showing that the US economy is improving, which boosted the greenback.
The greenback’s future performance is likely to be affected by political events in the US and its partner countries given the upcoming weekend.
The EUR/USD currency pair was trading at 1.1617 as at 15:45 GMT having dropped from a high of 1.1691. The GBP/USD currency pair was trading at 1.3073 having declined from a high of 1.3132.

US Dollar Remains Stable After Week of Important Events

The US dollar ended the week on a relatively strong footing considering how many important events happened during the past week’s trading, which could have hurt the currency.
US President Donald Trump at last named nominatedJerome Powell as the next Federal Reserve Chair, who will succeed Janet Yellen after her term expires in February. The House of Representatives unveiled the long-awaited tax bill on Thursday after a one-day delay. Nonfarm payrolls came out rather disappointing, hurting the dollar, but the positive services sector data rescuedthe currency.
Meanwhile, the policy announcement made by the Bank of England hurt the Great Britain pound significantly. While the bank hiked interest rates for the first time in a decade, the policy statement made an impression that it might be a one-off event.
EUR/USD rallied from 1.1604 to 1.1689 during the week, but retreated to end this week’s trading almost at the opening level, closing at 1.1606. GBP/USD opened at 1.3128, rallied to the week’s high of 1.3320, but slumped to end trading at 1.3074. USD/JPY ended the week at 114.03 after opening at 113.74 and falling to the weekly low of 112.95.
If you have any questions, comments or opinions regarding the US Dollar, feel free to post them using the commentary form below.
